Streamlined Design Approach Lands Mars Pathfinder

چکیده
ded systems software for planetary space exploration. The high degree of reliability, autonomy, and flexibility these systems require, combined with demanding mission requirements and the high cost of failure, place extraordinary demands on the systems produced. In September 1993, we began our attempt at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to land a spacecraft on the planet Mars. This spacecraft, Mars Pathfinder, landed a weather station, stereoscopic imager, and six-wheeled autonomous roving vehicle on a rocky Martian flood plain. Due to limited funds, Pathfinder’s development had to be dramatically different from the way in which previous spacecraft had been developed. Instead of the traditional 8to 10-year schedule and $1-billion-plus budget, Pathfinder was developed in three years for less than $150 million—the cost of some Hollywood movies! Dust devils as observed by Mars Pathfinder
[1] Dust devils are localized meteorological phenomena frequently observed in terrestrial dry lands and desert landscapes as well as on Mars. They are low-pressure, warm core vortices that form at the bottom of convective plumes and loft dust from the surface. They move with the speed of the ambient wind and are tilted by wind shears. The Mars Pathfinder detected dust devils as dust plumes in t...
متن کاملSPECTROPHOTOMETRIC CALIBRAnON OF IMAGER FOR MARS PATHFINDER DATASETS
This document describes the Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) calibration targets and outlines a procedure for their use in first-order spectrophotometric image calibration. The Mars Pathfinder mission and landing site are discussed, as are previous observations of Mars. Bidirectional reflectance theory relevant to target design and usage as well as planetary surface measurement will be develope...
متن کاملMars Pathfinder Microrover - Implementing a Low Cost Planetary Mission Experiment Iaa-l-0510
The Mars Pathfinder Microrover Flight Experiment (MFEX) is a NASA Office of Space Access and Technology (OSAT) flight experiment which has been delivered and integrated with the Mars Pathfinder (MPF) lander and spacecraft system. The total cost of the MFEX mission, including all subsystem design and development, test, integration with the MPF lander and operations on Mars has been capped at $25...
متن کاملOn-board Software for the Mars Pathfinder Microrover
The Pathfinder Micro-rover Flight experiment will perform engineering and science experiments on the Martian surface to pave the way for future Mars missions. The rover is controlled by a 1970's era microprocessor. Its on-board software, while in some ways a typical embedded-system design, has to deal with some unusual constraints. The rover will be operating in a harsh and mostly unknown envir...
متن کاملMesoscale Atmosphere Model Implementation into Mars Science Laboratory Performance Simulations
Introduction: Previous recent entries at Mars, like Pathfinder, Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) and Phoenix, were ballistic and therefore had smaller downrange distances between entry and touchdown compared to the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) guided entry. See Figure 1. Consequently “handcrafted” vertical profiles of the atmosphere at the landing site, tailored for the expected conditions on the...
